{"id":83,"date":"2008-01-11T16:27:11","date_gmt":"2008-01-11T16:27:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.itravelabout.com\/alappuzha-alleppey-kerala-india\/"},"modified":"2008-01-11T16:27:11","modified_gmt":"2008-01-11T16:27:11","slug":"alappuzha-alleppey-kerala-india","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.itravelabout.com\/alappuzha-alleppey-kerala-india\/","title":{"rendered":"Alappuzha (Alleppey), Kerala, India"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Alappuzha<\/strong> (aka Alleppey) is a pleasant<br \/>\nmarket town, surrounded by canals and coconut trees.&nbsp; It&#8217;s the major center<br \/>\nfrom which to explore the <a href=\"\/travel-guide\/asia\/india\/kerala\/backwaters\">backwaters<\/a>, although the<br \/>\nwaterways are busy here, <a href=\"\/travel-guide\/asia\/india\/kerala\/kollam\">Kollam<\/a> is much less<br \/>\ncrowded.&nbsp; It&#8217;s a nice place to spend a few days.<\/p>\n<p>Alappuzha is a town you can easily walk around.&nbsp;<br \/>\nThere are lots of shaded canal areas (although some of the neglected canals are<br \/>\nmosquito farms), and you find traditional trading warehouses about.&nbsp; There<br \/>\nis a surprisingly nice beach 2kms away, which is&nbsp;a nice walk.&nbsp; The<br \/>\nbeach is undeveloped, and swimming can be dangerous.&nbsp; There are a few<br \/>\nguesthouses near the beach, as well as snack stalls.<\/p>\n<p>There are plenty of ATMS and Internet places in town.<\/p>\n<h2>    Activities<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"\/travel-giuide\/asia\/india\/kerala\/backwaters\"><strong>Backwaters<\/strong><\/a><br \/>\n  &#8211; this is the major backwaters hub, which lots of choice.&nbsp; <a href=\"\/travel-guide\/asia\/india\/kerala\/kollam\">Kollam<\/a> is generally<br \/>\n  quieter, but has less choice. <\/p>\n<li><strong>Walks<\/strong> &#8211; it&#8217;s a<br \/>\n  nice place to stroll about <\/p>\n<li><strong>Beach<\/strong> &#8211; the beach is a 30 minute walk from the town<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>    Accommodation<\/h2>\n<p>    There are quite&nbsp;a few guesthouses about, although<br \/>\nthey are spread out.&nbsp;    A    lot of the town area is noisy, so go further from the<br \/>\ncenter and the jetty\/bus station if you want some    quiet.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lemon Tree<br \/><\/strong>tel: 9895543080<br \/>e: <a href=\"mailto:sanilmail@yahoo.com\">sanilmail@yahoo.com<\/a><br \/>A nice home stay<br \/>\nrun by two young guys, one of which used to work for the tourist information<br \/>\noffice.&nbsp; There are 3 rooms which are clean, have bathrooms, cold showers,<br \/>\nmosquito nets.&nbsp; There is nice shaded communal area.&nbsp; The house is on<br \/>\nthe corner of 2 nice canals, and is quiet.&nbsp; It&#8217;s a 10 minute walk to the<br \/>\nbus station\/jetty or town.&nbsp; These guys can arrange anything in town, but<br \/>\nthere is no hard sell.&nbsp; They often meet boats at the jetty.&nbsp;<br \/>\n    INR400.<\/p>\n<h2>    Getting to and from    Alappuzha<\/h2>\n<p>    There are regular trains and buses to the major towns in<br \/>\nKerala.&nbsp; The railway station is on the main line, with trains to major<br \/>\nIndian    cities.<\/p>\n<p>    There is a pleasant cruise between Alappuzha and<br \/>\nKollam.&nbsp; It leaves Alappuzha&nbsp; at 10.30am and arrives at Kollan at<br \/>\n6.30pm and costs INR300.&nbsp; It&#8217;s a nice way to see the backwaters.&nbsp;<br \/>\nThere are also shorter cruises from Alappuzha-Kumarakom and<br \/>\nAlappuzha-Kottayam.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Alappuzha (aka Alleppey) is a pleasant market town, surrounded by canals and coconut trees.&nbsp; It&#8217;s the major center from which to explore the backwaters, although the waterways are busy here, Kollam is much less crowded.&nbsp; It&#8217;s a nice place to spend a few days.
